Stroke of Midnight

A reveller writes "2014" with sparklers ahead of New Year's Eve, in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris

WordPress has kindly created 365 days of writing prompts for those of us who want a challenge and/or an extra push to write more. I obviously can’t guarantee I’ll follow through with this for 365 days, but it’s a start. Today’s prompt:

Where were you last night when 2013 turned into 2014? Is that where you’d wanted to be?

I was dancing a little too foolishly in my friend Oren’s kitchen where I stole a few ‘2014’ hats off of strangers’ heads and laughed the night away with my new friends. Often when you move to a new city, the friends you make initially are friends of convenience. Bonded by circumstance, you cling to one another as you try to gather your feet beneath you. And as time goes on, when you no longer need each other, you drift apart. I can happily say that is not the case this year. These aren’t just the friends I have, these are the friends I want. I couldn’t have asked for better.
